My Summer Reading List 2020

But, from this point onwards, I’m determined to work my way through my bookshelves before purchasing any news titles (my birthday in August doesn’t count…). Without further ado, here is my summer reading list.

Classic Novels

If there ever was a silver lining of lockdown, it’s having more time to soak up and enjoy classics. Still reading a classic a month, these are three tomes I plan to tick off my list this summer.

The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan the intellectual, whose mental tortures drive him to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family’s rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. As the ensuing investigation and trial reveal the true identity of the murder, Dostoyevsky’s dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur, and everyone’s faith in humanity is tested.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

Set in the rich farmland of California’s Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Adam Trask came to California from the East to farm and raise his family on the new rich land. But the birth of his twins, Cal and Aaron, brings his wife to the brink of madness, and Adam is left alone to raise his boys to manhood. One boy thrives nurtured by the love of all those around him; the other grows up in loneliness enveloped by a mysterious darkness.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Acclaimed by many as the world’s greatest novel, Anna Karenina provides a vast panorama of contemporary life in Russia and of humanity in general. In it Tolstoy uses his intense imaginative insight to create some of the most memorable characters in literature. Anna is a sophisticated woman who abandons her empty existence as the wife of Karenin and turns to Count Vronsky to fulfil her passionate nature – with tragic consequences. Levin is a reflection of Tolstoy himself, often expressing the author’s own views and convictions.

Historical Fiction

Despite being a genre that almost never fails to fascinate me, I don’t read enough historical fiction. Other titles on my list include ‘Lovely War’, ‘The Alice Network’, and ‘A Gentleman in Moscow.’ But for now, here are three I plan on reading this summer.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

“Despite their differences, sisters Viann and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight and Viann finds herself isolated so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her.

With life changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions.”

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

In Tokyo, sixteen-year-old Nao has decided there’s only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates’ bullying, but before she ends it all, Nao plans to document the life of her great-grandmother, a Buddhist nun who’s lived more than a century. A diary is Nao’s only solace—and will touch lives in a ways she can scarcely imagine.

Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox—possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami. As the mystery of its contents unfolds, Ruth is pulled into the past, into Nao’s drama and her unknown fate, and forward into her own future.

Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel

Contemporary Fiction

Contemporary fiction is a genre I tend to read the quickest. So, unsurprisingly, it’s the genre that features on my summer reading list the most.

Real Life by Brandon Taylor

Almost everything about Wallace is at odds with the Midwestern university town where he is working uneasily toward a biochem degree. Fleishman is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward

Jojo is thirteen years old and trying to understand what it means to be a man. His mother, Leonie, is in constant conflict with herself and those around her. She is black and her children’s father is white. Embattled in ways that reflect the brutal reality of her circumstances, she wants to be a better mother, but can’t put her children above her own needs, especially her drug use.

The Cat and the City by Nick Bradley

Mr. Loverman by Bernardine Evaristo

Fantasy

Fantasy is probably the genre that features most on my TBR. There are just so many series and well-loved whimsical stories that I’m yet to read. Nevertheless, these are three that I’m looking forward to reading this summer.

Conjure Women by Afia Atakora

Conjure Women is a sweeping story that brings the world of the South before and after the Civil War vividly to life. Spanning eras and generations, it tells of the lives of three unforgettable women: Miss May Belle, a wise healing woman; her precocious and observant daughter Rue, who is reluctant to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a midwife; and their master’s daughter Varina. The secrets and bonds among these women and their community come to a head at the beginning of a war and at the birth of an accursed child, who sets the townspeople alight with fear and a spreading superstition that threatens their newly won, tenuous freedom.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

The Earthsea Quartet by Ursula K. Le Guin

Women’s Prize

This summer I also hope to read the Women’s Prize shortlist before the winner is announced on September 9th. Admittedly, I’m yet to purchase a few of them, so I might have to deviate from my book-buying ban.

Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell

Drawing on Maggie O’Farrell’s long-term fascination with the little-known story behind Shakespeare’s most enigmatic play, HAMNET is a luminous portrait of a marriage, at its heart the loss of a beloved child

Warwickshire in the 1580s. Agnes is a woman as feared as she is sought after for her unusual gifts. She settles with her husband in Henley street, Stratford, and has three children: a daughter, Susanna, and then twins, Hamnet and Judith. The boy, Hamnet, dies in 1596, aged eleven. Four years or so later, the husband writes a play called Hamlet.

Dominicana by Angie Cruz

Weather by Jenny Offill

Mystery and Crime

Mystery and crimes are another two genres that always have me hooked, but I never seem to read much of! Featuring here are three notably different books that fall under the mystery and crime category that I’m looking forward to finally reading this summer.

The Godfather by Mario Puzo
