Two Thousand and Nineteen

Today marks the second day of the brand new year, and I am so ready for it. For many of us, January means a fresh start and new notebooks, ready to tackle the year ahead.

Far and wide, people are strolling into January wearing their rose-tinted glasses and setting themselves lofty goals for the new year. However, the envisioned perfect year ahead rarely goes to plan. Life gets in the way. Jobs and commitments take precedence.

Normally, if I don’t manage to stick to my goals within the first couple of weeks, the rest of the year is a complete write-off. I now realise how ridiculous that is. There is so much pressure from all angles that the new year is a ‘clean slate’, time to ‘hit the refresh button’. We’re so conditioned to approach January with a ‘new year, new me’ mindset, buying into diet plans, gym memberships. We need to achieve everything in the first month of the year and easily lose sight of the other 11 months.

There are 12 months. 365 days to works on our intentions slowly; setting short, achievable goals along the way. This year I’m setting myself some broader intentions which I’d like to focus on in 2019.

I’m aware that these post can feel a little ‘samey’. But, I think, for the most part, we write them for ourselves. It’s not only a cathartic exercise, but it’s also something to look back on at the end of the year. We can reflect on what we’ve achieved, and recognise what still needs a little work. So here’s to things looking up in 2019.

While I have other more personal goals I want to achieve and experience this year – apply for a publishing internship, knuckle down on my dreaded dissertation (which went from seeming a million miles away to now haunting me like a shadow), and travel to NYC being a few of them – here are my intentions for two thousand and nineteen.

2019 Bullet Journal Spread

I was such a creative child. I made ‘magazines’ by stapling together flimsy A4 paper, doodled my way through numerous notebooks and was always thinking up new stories, often left unfinished. At some point, my creativity came to a standstill. I want 2019 to be the year where I really indulge that side of my personality and let it thrive:

Bullet Journaling

I’m always so inspired by how creative some bullet journals are. From beautiful calligraphy to cute little doodles, I feel slightly intimidated when it comes to curating my own journal. This year I want to use my journal as a way of staying more organised; be it by simply jotting down a list of films I’d like to watch, or creating a double-paged spread of monthly goals. I’ll have all my muddled thoughts stashed in one place. If I have time to make it look more beautiful, then that’s just a bonus.

Blog writing

While creating my blog has undoubtedly encouraged me to write more again, it’s something I intend to do more regularly. I’ve created a loose blog post schedule for this month, so we’re already off to a good start.

Yet another hobby which somehow got lost among the university applications and coursework deadlines. I find doodling so relaxing and hope to spend more time with a pencil in my hand whenever I need a break from the hustle and bustle.

Being in Spain for another 7 months, I’d kick myself if I didn’t take the opportunity to travel some more. There is so much of the country I am yet to see. I love city breaks and in 2019 I really want to spread my wings outside of my little Madrid flat bubble and explore the country. As soon as I can strip off my five layers of winter clothing, I’m hoping to visit Valencia, Barcelona, and other gems Spain has to offer.

Find Balance

Finding a balance between social media, work, health and self-care is difficult. I’m baffled at how other people do it. Too often I neglect self-care, working every day and not taking any time out for myself. I feel guilty for not working, be it for my job or on my blog. However, I inevitably wind up feeling burned out and stressed. In 2019 I plan on spending at least one day a week curling up with a book and a mug of tea or binge-watching a series on Netflix. Really, anything that doesn’t involve aimlessly scrolling through my Instagram feed.

…And finally (congratulations if you have made it this far!), read some more. I rekindled my love for reading last year and I’ve upped my 2019 reading goal to an onerous 60 books. I also intend on reading one classic a month, as well as some non-fiction books, both which didn’t receive much love in 2018.

Have you set yourself any intentions for two thousand and nineteen?

Thanks for reading

  1. I hope 2019 is a really positive year for you lovely! I’m also travelling to Barcelona this year! I’m looking forward to reading your new content, your blog is one that I adore because it’s so easy to binge-read and so beautiful too!
    Love Casey x

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Ah that’s so sweet, thank you! Have an amazing time in Barcelona, I can’t wait! Hope you have an incredible year lovely ✨

  2. These are great goals, I was just saying myself in the #lbloggers chat that I much prefer to set myself small goals in the beginning of the year with the hope to grow them throughout! It doesn’t always happen, but I find it’s a more successful way for me!

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Yeah I find them so much more achievable, longer ones can be quite intimidating otherwise! Hope you have an incredible year ✨

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Exactly! We put way too much pressure on ourselves, and there’s really no need.

  3. Good luck with all your goals! I’m much like you in that I try to start fresh in January and if I don’t stick to it the whole year is a write off especially when they fly by like last year did! One classic book a month would be such an achievement! My goal is 1 classic this year which sounds rubbish now haha

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Thank you! Yeah it can seem impossible to achieve anything when the year flies by so quickly. Haha I hardly read any classics last year so it’s better than nothing! Have an incredible year 🌌

  4. I’m with you that I prefer to work on goals slowly rather than a huge new year refresh. Reading more is a goal of mine too. And you definitely need to explore before you leave Spain!! Good luck with your goals x

    • eviejayne eviejayne

I find smaller goals so much more achievable. Thank you! Hope you have a lovely year 🌌

  5. These sound like really great goals to have, especially finding a balance, I’ve found that hard for a while with having a job and blogging. That’s great if you can read 60 books I can barely read 2 a year! Xx

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Yeah it can be so difficult to find an equal balance! Hope you have an amazing year xx

    • eviejayne eviejayne

It sounds like you’re off to a great start then! Thank you! Hope you have an incredible year x

  6. Julia Julia

This is such a lovely and refreshing post to read, a carthartic order of your plans is always a good post to read. I feel so much more motivated to achieve my own goals when reading others. Good luck with following this through and have an amazing time exploring Spain, can’t wait to see the photos!!

    • eviejayne eviejayne

I feel exactly the same! Thank you so much Julia, have an amazing year 🌌

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Exactly! I don’t really like the term resolutions, I feel it implies something that needs to be changed. Intentions feel so much more achievable, and not nearly as intimidating! Thanks for reading x

  7. One of my goals of 2019 is the infamous saving money to travel by 2020. I’ve started reading again, not to stress myself much and take some day off from working in general and learn to love myself more.

    Love your post!

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Ah best of luck with your goals! I really should focus on saving up some money too. Have an amazing year 🌌

  8. Happy 2019 babes! I loved reading your 2019 goals and I hope you achieve them all! Reading is also one of my goals for 2019 so here’s to holding ourselves accountable!

    Bukola Veronica,

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Thank you! Ah best of luck with yours too, have an amazing year! x

  9. I’ve set the goal of starting an online plastic free / zero waste shop! Going to be challenging but fun (I hope)! 🌿

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Ah what an incredible goal! Best of luck, I look forward to seeing it grow! x

    • eviejayne eviejayne

It can be so difficult! Thank you, have an amazing year ✨

  10. I feel like I too fall into the rut of making intentions/goals and then never following through. I think my 3 biggest goals are to finally live a healthier life so I can lose weight and keep it off, pay off as much of my debt as possible (hopefully all of it), and to keep up with my blog consistently throughout the entire year.

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Yeah it can be so easy to lose sight of them, but that’s why I’m not putting too much pressure on myself this year! Best of luck with your goals x

  11. I absolutely love reading and it’s definitely something I want to do more in 2019! I’d also like to explore and travel a little more in 2019, even if it’s just in the UK xx

    • eviejayne eviejayne

There are so many beautiful places I’m yet to visit in the UK! I’d love to take a trip to Brighton and Yorkshire this year. Hope you have an incredible 2019 xx

  12. I know what you mean when you said that the whole new year, new me thing can be the same old thing again and again but I definitely appreciate that for some people it’s a more obvious clean slate deal, like it feels like a new start. Sounds like you have some great goals and wishes for 2019 and I hope the rest of your time in Spain goes well too. I want to start a bullet journal too, I think I’m going to try and start it in February and try doing a page each day!

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Yeah the new year is definitely a great time to set some new goals! Thank you so much, hope you have a lovely year, and best of luck with the bullet journaling! ✨

  13. These are great goals. Here’s to achieveing them and having a wonderful 2019.

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Thank you! Best of luck with your goals ✨

  14. Beautiful handlettering on your bullet journal!

My 2019 word of the year is COURAGE and I’m still doing some soul searching to figure out how exactly I want to apply it. Maybe some solo travel? Maybe putting myself out there for more casting calls? We shall see!

  15. Great goals! Your so right in every aspect, we put so much pressure on ourselves to create big resolutions and achieve them.. if we don’t, we see ourselves as a ‘failure’. Go you for setting great goals and I hope 2019 brings you loads of luck and I look forward to seeing more of your posts!

    Leigh xx

I hope that you get to do all of these things ☺️ 60 books is impressive – I look forward to reading about what you have read! Granada is absolutely beautiful and I think pretty easy to get to from Madrid – my favourite city after Valencia! Thank you for sharing x

    • eviejayne eviejayne

Thank you! Oh I’ll be sure to add that to my list of places to visit, once it’s a bit warmer anyway haha, thanks for reading! ✨

  17. Great post 😍 love your goals I want to travel more this year too 🌏

  18. Best of luck for the year ahead!! It is a lot of the ‘new me’ mentality in January and sometimes I fall for it but other times I am just carrying on as before. I feel quite motivated for this year though and have set some goals.
Balance is good one as you got to find time for everything– working hard but remembering to rest when necessary. I always forget to make time for hobbies like drawing, reading so I relate to yours which were also these.
    Good luck 💕

    • eviejayne eviejayne

The new year is definitely a great time set yourself some new goals! Ah exactly, I’m striving to make more time for the things I love. Thank you, and best of luck with your goals! ✨

      • It is indeed 😊 You’re welcome. Thank you 💕

  20. These sound like great goals! I’m always in awe of people who create gorgeous bullet journals, I’d love to make more time for it this year as well. Drawing and doodling is so relaxing too, one of my favourite things to do it colouring in, it’s really therapeutic. Exploring more of Spain sounds really exciting, it looks like a beautiful country with so much to see and do. All the best with your goals Evie, hope you have a wonderful 2019 ❤ xx
